What made you decide to pursue your degree in WDOC?

When I was in high school, a web design class I enrolled in was at risk of cancelation for its second semester due to low enrollment. I had developed such an interest in the subject that I took it upon myself to save the class. I pleaded and convinced enough students from other classes to sign a pledge to make a switch to web design. Since then, that same interest remained in me. The opportunity to go back to the first subject in school that I ever loved and explore its progression and application was an exciting prospect. I have always sought out to be challenged and interested in all the college coursework I have done. Continuing my education at the graduate level brought that challenge to another level, and specifically with this program, the interest as well. This program also provides the type of knowledge needed to be an effective communicator and designer which is considered an asset to any employer in the field.

What has been the biggest thing you have learned in your classes?

The biggest thing I’ve learned is how to design in a way that effectively communicates to an audience. Knowing how people perceive design and how much thought goes into a design has been a big part of that realization. Also, creating my own work and explaining how and why it works has strengthened that opinion.

What have you learned in your classes that you have already applied to your job?

I’ve Incorporated the fundamentals of digital layout design and brand identity at my current internship. Specifically, when designing various marketing collateral and merchandise graphics. Knowing the proper application of the fundamentals helps me design effective pieces that communicate with purpose.

What are your career aspirations?

I would like to take what I learn and hopefully use it to help missionary or other community-serving nonprofits by improving or creating their digital presence to effectively engage with the public. I also hope to do freelance work and possibly develop an online business stemming from the knowledge and ideas gained in the program.

What accomplishment are you the proudest of achieving?

The opportunity to have some of my projects showcased is a great accomplishment, along with being chosen as a student spotlight in the program.
