What made you decide to pursue your degree in WDOC?

I was a graduate student in the Department of Agricultural Education and Communication when I discovered the opportunity to earn a graduate certificate in web design and online communication through the College of Journalism. I had studied these topics in my own department through my graduate and undergraduate programs but I was interested in learning more so I decided to pursue a certificate in WDOC.

What has been the biggest thing you have learned in your classes?

I had used Adobe software before entering this program but during my studies in WDOC I was able to learn so much more about the programs and different ways to use them. I also had no experience in coding before I entered WDOC but this program gave me a great foundation in the art of coding as well. One of the most important aspects I think I learned during this program was about how to interact and work with clients. The clients are the most important people in almost any project a designer does, it important to be able to communication with them and understand their needs and wants.

What have you learned in your classes that you have already applied to your job?

I do a lot of graphic design in my position and I have been able to apply many of the techniques and skills I learned in the program to my workflow. Since I am equipped with this knowledge I am often the authority in my workplace when it comes to design aspects.

What are your career aspirations?

In my career I hope that I can use my skills in communication and passion for creativity to serve and promote the agricultural industry. I currently work for a video production company and we are making plans to create a story-telling effort to provide a voice for the agricultural industry with the help of farmers, ranchers, students, teachers and their families. It is projects like this one and others that I hope to be a part of one day in order to make an impact on the way people view agriculture.

What accomplishment are you the proudest of achieving?

I am proud to say that I learn how to code, even if it was just the basics. I never thought I’d learn how to code and the thought of it seemed quite intimidating. This program gave me the knowledge, skills and tools I needed to accomplish my goal of learning web design and coding.
