What made you decide to pursue your degree in WDOC?

I received my undergraduate degree in Marketing. I always loved the creativity that my advertising classes entailed. I also sold paitings in undergraduate because it was a way to express my creativity. I began pursuing my MBA at the University of Florida, and that helped me realize that Florida had this WDOC program that would teach me what I have always wanted to learn. I always wanted to design advertisements or websites for sports leagues or fashion brands, but I did not have that program at my undergraduate school. Each course offering addressed things that would help me start my career in graphic design and advertising. This program has taught me so many things that I even carry over into my MBA program, such as presentation design. The fact that this program is enhancing my “outside of the box” thinking has helped me not only learn the elements of graphic and web design, but it has also helped my marketing strategies become more effective. Pursuing this program has been the best decision.

What has been the biggest thing you have learned in your classes?

I think learning adaption was the most beneficial. I have seen many of my projects adapt for the better, but some changes were not the best. In our live presentations, the constructive criticism helped me keep adapting. This is a great lesson in that you have to constantly adapt to your clients’ needs and wants. Becoming comfortable with adaption and constructive criticism was a huge lesson, but it promotes a greater end result in your work.

What have you learned in your classes that you have already applied to your job?

I have actually started some freelance graphic design jobs for local musicians and artists. So everything I have learned, I have already used. I am able to do some work to help these artists that are just starting out in order for them to save money, and it helps me keep practicing and bettering my skills. As for my job, I have been able to enhance our social media campaigns as well as our SEO from the lessons in this program. I really do think that this program has refined its courses to include only teaching lessons that students will use, and I think that is why this program is so beneficial.

What are your career aspirations?

I love graphic and web design, and I love sports as well. Upon finding and entering this program, my aspiration has always been to comingle those two passions. Whether it is advertising for a sports team, such as a NBA team, or strategizing campaigns for a fashion company, I want to work to become an effective designer that can produce an effective end results that would make my clients happy. In the sports world, I would love to see fan experiences increased from an effective campaign I worked on as well. There are many things I would love to do, and as long as designing and strategizing is involved, I will always be content.

What accomplishment are you the proudest of achieving?

I really am most proud of entering this program with no prior design degree or creative software experience. I think MySpace was the closest thing to coding I had reached prior. I think embarking on this journey was a little frightening because I hadn’t experienced designing things for others. Even my business selling paintings came later in life because I think letting others judge your work is hard, and in this field, people see your work all of the time. I am most proud to achieve getting into this program and learning things that will help me enter the creative career fields. Until this program, I never thought about acting upon those dreams, and thankfully, this MMC5277 class especially, helped me find and learn about a career I would love.
