What made you decide to pursue your degree in WDOC?
After switching majors many times during my undergraduate education, I finally landed on studio art and completely fell in love with visual art and design. Throughout my bachelors program, I learned how to use Adobe programs, and I became a self-taught graphic designer. However, I did not feel challenged enough doing graphic design for print only, and I was fortunate to discover the WDOC program. I thought taking my design skills to the web would be a perfect solution to my conundrum. I also enjoyed the psychology of marketing, and this program allowed me to learn how to conduct research and analysis of marketing efforts.
What has been the biggest thing you have learned in your classes?
I think the biggest thing I have learned in my classes is how to optimize a website for SEO. I feel this is an important aspect in all stages of creating a website, as there are best SEO practices for coding, content creation, and design.
What have you learned in your classes that you have already applied to your job?
I have used both design skills and coding skills learned from this program in my work and internships. After the first semester of this program, I was able to better my graphic designs for my job, and I was able to offer web-optimized designs for our social media accounts. As I continued throughout the program, I was then able to utilize the skills learned in the Web Interactivity class to make design changes to a WordPress site at my graphics internship.
What are your career aspirations?
My ideal position after graduation would allow me to do it all: design, code, and research/analyze. Although I would love to own my own web design company down the road, I feel it is important to get experience in website design, SEO, and digital marketing at an established company for some time, first.
What accomplishment are you the proudest of achieving?
I think my proudest accomplishment thus far has been maintaining a 3.95 or better GPA as a full-time student throughout the program, completing the program in less than 18 months. Although it was tough going full speed ahead while working or completing internships, this program was the best decision I could have made for my career!
